Rod Laver Arena and Rutherglen shows postponed

Midnight Oil is disappointed to announce that Rob Hirst has returned a positive test for Covid-19. As a result the band needs to postpone its next two gigs to allow Rob to quarantine as required by Victorian law. Therefore the Oils’ show at RLA (With Amyl & The Sniffers) on Wednesday Mar 9 will now happen on Sun Mar 27. Their gig at Rutherglen (with Hoodoo Gurus and All Our Exes Live In Texas) planned for Saturday Mar 12 will now happen on Sun Apr 24, on the ANZAC Day long weekend. All tickets will automatically be valid for the new dates so no action is required by ticket holders. Refunds will be available from point of purchase for those who are unable to attend the rescheduled dates. The band would like to apologise to everyone inconvenienced by this development and thank everyone who has sent Rob ‘get well’ messages. Despite the positive test he actually feels a bit better today and is confident of a full and speedy recovery.

MIDNIGHT OIL ANNOUNCE SURPRISE ‘ONE FOR THE PLANET’ GIG TOMORROW NIGHT AT THE PALAIS

Unfortunately Midnight Oil has to cancel tomorrow night’s “One For The Planet” benefit gig. Drummer Rob Hirst has been battling a chest infection for several days. He has consistently returned negative covid tests but his symptoms worsened after last night’s rain drenched show at Mt Duneed. Therefore out of an abundance of caution the band has reluctantly elected to cancel their benefit show at the Palais Theatre. Hopefully this will allow Rob to recover fully for shows later this week at RLA and Rutherglen. The band sincerely apologises to fans for the inconvenience and disappointment. Ticket purchasers for the Palais will be automatically refunded, no further action is required.

Midnight Oil will play their classic “10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1” album in its entirety at St Kilda’s historic Palais Theatre on Monday 7 March, alongside other material including songs from their latest ARIA Chart topper, ‘RESIST’.

Profits will be donated to environmental groups including Australian Conservation Foundation (ACF) and Greenpeace with whom the band has been working closely on their current Resist: The Final Tour.

The surprise extra show was actually announced onstage at Mt Duneed last night to over 12,000 people with tickets on-sale now via frontiertouring.com/onefortheplanet, a strict limit of four per person applies. As Wednesday night’s gig at Rod Laver Arena is sold out, this special extra performance will allow Melburnians one more chance to see the Oils in full flight.

It’s not the first time the band has performed “10-1” live – on 2017’s tour they added a similarly ‘last minute’ show in WA called “One For The Oceans” which raised money for reef groups. “One For The Planet” reprises that theme with a broader eco-focus.

The Palais Theatre is a particularly good fit for the night’s environmental theme. The venue has an active Green Policy in place which has resulted in a range of initiatives being implemented over recent years including a Power Monitoring and Usage Reduction Strategy, biodegradable cups, a waste separation system and the replacement of LED lighting throughout the majority of the venue.

According to a venue spokesperson: “We are also pleased to announce that the next green project to roll out at the Palais Theatre will be the installation of solar power, scheduled to be installed in 2023.”

Midnight Oil’s new album, ‘RESIST’ has a strong focus on the climate crisis with songs like ‘Rising Seas’ and ’At The Time Of Writing’ shining a clear spotlight on this urgent existential issue. In a joint statement the band said:

“We’re experiencing the climate crisis right now, but you wouldn’t know it from the Morrison government’s pallid, pathetic response. We’ll play our heart out and raise some $ for the community groups who are driving real change.”

OILS ALBUM TOPS OZ CHARTS & BAND ANNOUNCES O/S SHOWS AS FINAL TOUR COMMENCES

Midnight Oil’s RESIST has become the band’s fifth ARIA #1 Album as they kick off their Final Tour in support of the acclaimed release. More shows will follow around Australia over coming months and limited tickets are available for some gigs. 

It was also announced today that the tour will head overseas in June/July for newly announced dates in North America and Europe including some of the world’s most iconic venues like The Hollywood Palladium, Toronto’s Massey Hall, Hammerstein Ballroom in New York and The Roundhouse in London. That leg will culminate at Paris’ greatest concert hall, L’Olympia. Tickets for those shows will go onsale over the coming week. The #1 debut matches the achievements of 2020’s THE MAKARRATA PROJECT, 1990’s BLUE SKY MINING and their 80’s classics DIESEL & DUST (1987) and RED SAILS IN THE SUNSET (1984) and RESIST has attracted some of the best reviews in the Oils’ storied career. For example:
