A new short film about Midnight Oil titled ‘Backburning’ will screen as part of Sydney Film Festival 2017.
‘Backburning’ captures the calm before the storm, as Midnight Oil reunite in the red centre of Australia to make plans. Their conviction and drive made them a singular force in music until their singer chose to become a Member of Parliament: a decision that ultimately caused the band to fall silent for 15 years. ‘Backburning’ provides a unique insight into the moment when Midnight Oil first regroup in this place which has always been special to them.
‘Backburning’ also recaps Midnight Oil’s history, through archive footage, band interviews and Aaron Pedersen’s narration. We meet them at the very beginning (when Peter Garrett still had hair) as they form on Sydney’s Northern Beaches during a tumultuous time in Australian history. We revisit how they forged their fierce and uncompromising reputation: with power and passion. Then we rejoin them around an outback campfire to discover why they have come together again here and now. The film is written and directed by Paul Clarke.
Midnight Oil ‘Backburning’ is scheduled to screen on the following dates and locations:
Tue 13 Jun, 6:00pm Events George Street Cinema 4
Thu 15 Jun, 8:15pm Events George Street Cinema 9
Sun 18 Jun, 6:05pm Dendy Cinemas Newtown

Iconic Australian rock band and agitators, Midnight Oil, will bring “The Great Circle 2017” World Tour back to the U.S. for a final four special shows this summer.
Sat 19 Aug – The Greek, Los Angeles CA
Mon 21 Aug – Terminal 5, New York NY
Sun 27 Aug – House of Blues, Cleveland OH
Tue 29 Aug – First Avenue, Minneapolis MN
After selling out their forthcoming New York and Los Angeles dates within minutes, the band has just announced special encore gigs in August at Terminal 5 and The Greek Amphitheatre respectively.
This unusual decision to announce return plays in those two cities before the first gigs have even happened is driven by the band’s desire to frustrate scalpers. Rather than paying inflated prices via resellers to attend the imminent May shows, fans now have the option of buying normal tickets to attend these summer dates.
The band will also play Cleveland (House of Blue) and Minneapolis (First Avenue) on this return visit for the first time in 15 years.
Ticket pre-sale starts 10:00am (local time) Tue 9 May. Pre-sale password will be sent to Midnight Oil’s mailing list at 9:30am EDT Tue 9 May, sign up via www.midnightoil.com/mailing-list.
General public on sale 10:00am (local time) Fri 12 May. Visit www.midnightoil.com/tour-dates for ticketing links and more info.
